ACFA’s education and community is dear to Awa, because it protects her from the dangers of poverty and “is the key to open doors.” She is motivated not only by the idea of earning a degree, but also by the opportunity to “honor ACFA for its help.” The Animal Welfare Association in Voorhees, NJ, a 501 (c)3 nonprofit HQHV Spay/Neuter, Pet Wellness Clinic, and Adoption Animal Shelter, is seeking to add enthusiastic, hard-working full-time and part-time veterinary technicians to our organization. Her work has clearly paid off, as she is now enrolled in 8th grade and participates in vocational training for hair braiding. Awa arrived at ACFA, where she worked tirelessly to make up for her lost schooling years. However, in 2011, things finally took a turn for the better. Their strictly survival-based lifestyle forced the children to withdraw from school and consequently lose all their academic credentials. She reverted to selling items on the street, leaving Awa and her siblings unattended, neglected, and ultimately alone. Awa’s father unexpectedly passed away, leaving her mother alone with two sons and three daughters.
